All of them are project-based with no guaranteed hours. Compare payment schedules and location rules before you apply.

Details are as published on 16 to 17 October 2026. "Not stated" means we could not find it on the pages we read, not that it does not exist.
How DataAnnotation compares
- Entry: a one-attempt Starter Assessment, with no feedback if you fail. See the assessment guide.
- Pay: "starting at" and "up to" ranges that its own pages state differently. See the DataAnnotation review.
- Payment: PayPal, with deposits within a few days after you request them.
- Reviews: 3.9 on Trustpilot from 1,975 reviews, with complaints about no reply, removed access and withdrawals.
- Versus Outlier: Outlier publishes no rate card but shows you the rate before a project, pays weekly on Tuesdays by PayPal, Airtm or ACH, and publishes a list of 117 supported countries and territories. DataAnnotation pays by PayPal on request, lists no countries and allows one assessment attempt.
How to choose
- You have credentials (law, finance, medicine, engineering, a language): look at micro1, Mercor and Alignerr first, because pay follows expertise.
- You are in the US and a student or graduate: Handshake AI is built for you, with strict rules on AI tools.
- You want a clear payment calendar: Outlier, Mercor and Alignerr document theirs.
- You are outside the US: check the location rules first. micro1, Outlier and Mercor publish lists you can read before you apply.
- You want to start without credentials: general evaluation roles and task platforms are the entry points, at lower pay. See remote AI training jobs.
Whichever you choose
- Never pay to apply, be verified or be placed.
- Use only the platform's own site, not a recruiter on a chat app or free email address.
- Keep your own record of hours and tasks, and withdraw earnings regularly.
- Do not rely on any of them as your only income.
Frequently asked questions
What companies are similar to DataAnnotation?
It depends on your background. For expert and professional work, micro1, Mercor, Alignerr and Handshake AI (US only) are the closest. For task-based work with lower entry bars, Remotasks, OneForma, Mindrift and Clickworker are options. We do not rank them. Read each review and compare what is published.
Which is the best data annotation platform?
There is no single best one, and we do not rank them. The right one depends on your credentials, your country and how you want to be paid. Compare the tables above on work type, published pay, payment schedule and location, then read each review before you spend time on an assessment.
Is prolific or data annotation better?
We cannot say one is better, because they do different things. Prolific runs paid research studies and AI tasks, shows no hourly minimum on its participant page and lets you cash out from $6 through PayPal. DataAnnotation offers AI training tasks after a one-attempt assessment and pays through PayPal on request. Compare them in the tables above and read the DataAnnotation review.
Which data annotation company is best to work for?
We do not rank them. Platforms differ most in what they publish about pay, hours and contracts. Outlier, Mercor and Alignerr document their payment calendars, and micro1, Outlier and Mercor publish location lists you can read before you apply. All of them are project-based with no guaranteed hours.
Is data annotation actually worth it?
It can be, for flexible side income, if you accept the risks that show up in reviews of every platform: projects that end, accounts removed, and pay that depends on accepted work. Read the Trustpilot reviews of any platform before you invest time.
Do people actually make money on data annotation?
Some do. DataAnnotation's reviewers praise fair pay when work is available, and the other platforms here say they pay contributors. But none of them guarantees hours, and reviewers describe long gaps without projects and, in a few cases, approved earnings they could not withdraw. Treat any figure as a range, not a promise.
Does data annotation actually pay well?
It can at the top of its listed ranges, but its pages do not agree. DataAnnotation lists generalist work up to $50 an hour and coding up to $150 or more, while its FAQ gives "starting at" rates such as $25 to $50 or more for general projects. For comparison, micro1's expert guide gives $15 to $40 for general annotation and $50 to $100 for domain review. Plan around the lower figures.
How does data annotation pay you?
By PayPal. DataAnnotation's FAQ says deposits are delivered within a few days after you request them, and it does not state a fixed schedule. Details are in the DataAnnotation review.
How long does it take to get paid at Dataannotation?
A few days after you request a payout, according to its FAQ. It does not state a fixed payment schedule, and its pages disagree on whether payouts are weekly or on request, so check inside your account. Weekly alternatives include Outlier, Mercor, Handshake AI and Clickworker.
Is data annotation a legit AI company?
It is an operating platform for AI training work, with 1,975 Trustpilot reviews (3.9 out of 5) on 16 October 2026. Its site does not name the company that operates it, and its reviewers report both fair pay and problems such as removed access and withdrawals that did not arrive. See the DataAnnotation review for the sources.
Is data annotation legit in 2026?
It is an operating platform and many reviewers say work is flexible and pays fairly when available, but 21 percent of its Trustpilot reviews are one-star, mostly about support, locked accounts and withdrawals. It is not an obvious scam, but the risks are real. The detail is in the DataAnnotation review.
Can data annotation tell if you use AI?
DataAnnotation's public pages do not say whether or how it checks for AI use. Do not rely on third-party claims about what is allowed or detected. Follow the instructions shown inside the assessment and each project. See the assessment guide.
Is data annotation dead?
Not on the evidence we can see: DataAnnotation was operating on 16 and 17 October 2026, with Trustpilot reviews dated as recently as that period, and the other platforms in the tables above were operating too. Work on every platform is project-based, so availability can change.
How many people get accepted to data annotation?
DataAnnotation does not publish an acceptance rate. It allows one assessment attempt and says it cannot respond to every applicant, and many reviewers describe never hearing back. See the assessment guide.
Is it hard to pass data annotation assessment?
It can be, and you get one attempt with no retakes. DataAnnotation publishes no pass rate or sample questions. The full answer is in our assessment guide.
Which sites like DataAnnotation pay weekly?
Outlier pays weekly on Tuesdays, Mercor on Wednesdays, Handshake AI by Wednesday, Alignerr on a weekly cycle and Remotasks says weekly. Clickworker also says weekly. Appen pays monthly, and micro1, Mindrift and OneForma pay twice a month.
Are there DataAnnotation alternatives that are not US-only?
Yes. micro1 hires globally except 21 listed countries, Outlier publishes a 117-country list including Mexico, and Mercor publishes a supported-country list that includes Mexico. Handshake AI is US only.
What if DataAnnotation rejected me or never replied?
DataAnnotation allows one assessment attempt and says it cannot respond to every applicant. Other platforms have their own screening, and some, like micro1, say they give feedback if you do not pass. None of them guarantees work.
Which alternatives are scams?
The platforms on this page are real companies. Scams impersonate them. Never pay to apply, apply only on the platform's own site, and be wary of recruiters on chat apps or free email addresses.
If micro1 hires you through this link and you meet its conditions, we may be paid a referral fee.
