Short answer

Handshake AI is a real program run by a real company, with a documented weekly Stripe payout and strong scam warnings. It is also US-only, project-based with no guaranteed hours, and strict: suspected AI use means unpaid work and possible removal. Trustpilot reviewers and one Business Insider report describe contractors who say they were suspended and not paid. Try it if you are in the US and can afford for the work to stop.

What Handshake AI is

Handshake introduced Handshake AI on 12 June 2025 as a service providing expert human model validation for frontier AI labs, using its network of students and graduates. The program people apply to is called the Handshake AI Fellowship, and the roles are called AI trainers. It was earlier called the MOVE program (Model Validation Expert).

The word "fellowship" misleads. Handshake describes paid, project-based contract work, says it is not a full-time job, and says it does not sponsor school credit. Fellows work for partner AI labs that Handshake does not name on its public pages. Handshake's own pages disagree about scale: one says $500 million in payouts and 188,000 fellows, another says $100 million and 750,000 fellows.

Who can join

  • Age and background: 18 or older. You do not have to be a student, and no AI experience is required for general projects. Specialist projects ask for experience or advanced degrees.
  • Location: you must be based in the US and work from inside the US. VPNs, proxies and location-masking tools are not permitted.
  • Work authorization: a Social Security number or ITIN and a work authorization Handshake can support. It lists citizens, permanent residents, F-1 on CPT or OPT, DACA, refugees, asylum grantees and TPS as supported, and F-1 STEM OPT, J-1, H-1B and TN as unsupported. Its introduction page lists J-1 and H-1B as eligible, so its own help center disagrees with itself.
  • International: participation is "currently invite-only". Mexico is not mentioned.

How hiring works

  1. Sign up with a Handshake account, verify your phone and confirm work authorization.
  2. Upload a resume and accept the Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Contractor Agreement.
  3. Wait to be matched. Handshake reviews applications on a rolling basis, says selection is competitive, and gives no fixed timeline. Applying does not guarantee a project.
  4. Per project: verify your identity through Persona, then complete the project's assessment, which can be a knowledge quiz, a practice task or a written evaluation. Retakes are not available in most cases. Some projects add a background check.

Handshake's help center does not describe an interview for fellows. The Terms of Service on its AI site call Handshake AI "an AI interviewer tool", so an interview feature exists in some form.

What Handshake AI pays

Handshake says every project is paid, with its own rate, "$17/hr to $150+/hr". The role pages we read show these ceilings, each labeled "depending on the project":

RolePer hour (USD)
AI Evaluation Specialist (generalist)up to $17
Energy Professionalup to $80
FP&A Analystup to $80
Philosophy Expert (PhD)up to $120
Software Engineerup to $120
Game Developer / Designerup to $125
PCB Designerup to $125

These are ceilings. Handshake does not publish a typical rate. Business Insider reported that the CEO said on a podcast that contractors average over $100 to $125 an hour, which is a company claim and cannot apply to the $17 generalist role.

Pay models and caps

  • Four models: pay per hour, pay per task, a hybrid, or progressive pay per task in stages. Your project agreement and dashboard control what applies.
  • Time caps: hourly projects have a maximum time per task, and you are paid only up to that cap however long a task took. Weekly hour caps may apply.
  • Unpaid time: the onboarding checklist, optional meetings and time lost to technical issues. Onboarding is paid only if the project terms list it.
  • Referrals: a referral bonus of 10 percent of the referred contractor's hourly rate on their first accepted project, after they complete 10 paid hours.

How you are paid

  • When: payouts are typically sent by Wednesday afternoon for the previous Monday to Sunday. Handshake says processing can take about 48 hours and funds should arrive within about three days.
  • How: Stripe for payouts, with tax forms handled by TaxBandits. You complete the tax form and payout setup before you are paid.
  • Disputes: wait until noon Pacific on Friday, then use the pay dispute form. Changing your payout method requires a selfie re-verification.
  • Not stated: the minimum payout and fees.

Contract, hours and rules

You agree to work as an independent contractor with your own tax responsibilities. The Terms of Service include binding arbitration, a class-action waiver and a one-year limit on claims. There is no minimum number of hours. Role pages say most contributors work about 5 to 20 hours a week when a project is active. Handshake itself says the work "can wind down just as fast" as it ramps up and should not be your only income.

Rules that decide whether you get paid

  • No AI tools. Large language models and AI-assisted tools, including grammar checkers, are prohibited unless authorized in writing. If Handshake concludes you used one, the work is rejected and you are not paid for it, including the time spent. Keep your preparatory materials for 90 days.
  • No VPN or location masking, and work only from inside the US.
  • One account per person, and your legal name must match your ID.
  • Time tracking is reviewed. Handshake defines time fraud and says logs may be audited.
  • Removal. Fellows can be removed from projects if expectations are not met. The help center describes an appeal request, but one email in Business Insider's report said "there is no appeal process".

Is Handshake AI legit? What reviewers and the press say

On 17 October 2026 Handshake's Trustpilot profile (joinhandshake.com) had a 1.8 TrustScore from 28 reviews: 7 percent five-star and 86 percent one-star. The company has not replied to negative reviews. Two cautions: that profile mixes the AI program with Handshake's older job network, and 28 is a small sample. A separate profile for handshake.ai has four reviews, all one-star.

  • Praised: two five-star reviews, calling it reputable for US citizens and saying they were paid on time.
  • Criticized: pay problems on project work (unpaid or reduced pay after review, hours cut retroactively, pay far below the advertised rate), bans or removals tied to alleged AI use or a VPN, long setup with no project, and US-only restrictions.

Business Insider reported on 4 March 2026 that some contractors on OpenAI-related projects said Handshake AI was withholding thousands of dollars after suspending their accounts. It reported that four of five contractors it spoke to were unpaid, that Handshake told one they had exceeded time benchmarks and worked from outside the US, and that a Handshake representative declined to comment. It also reported a contractor who won $6,475 in small claims court. Bloomberg Law reported on 29 September 2026 that Handshake AI Solutions is among companies accused of misclassifying AI trainers, in suits that are allegations, not rulings.

Scams that use the Handshake name

Handshake publishes detailed warnings. It says it never asks for sensitive information by text, in-app message, email, phone, social media or WhatsApp, and that you enter ID, tax and payout details only through Persona, TaxBandits and Stripe. Its listed examples include fake domains, "project lead" Gmail addresses and Google Forms asking for your Handshake password. Because international access is invite-only, unsolicited "Handshake AI recruiter" outreach is the main scam route. Report fraud at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Handshake also says it will never ask for your Social Security number by message or form, only through the official setup steps.

Who Handshake AI suits

A good fit: US-based students, graduates and professionals who want flexible project work and will follow the no-AI rule to the letter.

A poor fit: anyone outside the US, and anyone who needs predictable hours or cannot absorb a suspension.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Handshake AI job real?

Yes, the program is real: Handshake AI is run by Handshake, an established career network, and it publishes a contractor agreement, a payment schedule and detailed scam warnings. It also has a poor Trustpilot score (1.8 from 28 reviews) and press reports of contractors who say they were not paid after suspensions. It is not an obvious scam, but it has documented pay disputes, and fake "Handshake AI recruiter" messages are the main scam route.

Is Handshake a legit site?

Handshake itself is an established career network. It says it was founded in 2014 to help students launch careers, and describes connecting 25 million knowledge workers, 1,600+ educational institutions and 1 million employers. Those are Handshake's own figures. Handshake AI, its paid AI training program, is a newer part of the same company, and its Trustpilot profile (joinhandshake.com) mixes both.

Do you actually get paid from Handshake AI?

Handshake says yes: payouts are typically sent by Wednesday afternoon through Stripe for the previous Monday to Sunday week. You must complete a tax form first, and Handshake says that without a valid one it may pause tasking or withhold payments. Work Handshake rejects, including work it concludes used AI tools, is not paid, and some Trustpilot reviewers and a Business Insider report describe contractors who say they were not paid after suspensions.

Is it safe to give Handshake AI my SSN?

Only through Handshake's own official setup steps, and check its privacy policy first. Handshake says tax forms are required by law, and its W-9 asks for a Social Security number or an EIN. It says you enter ID, tax and payout details only through Persona, TaxBandits and Stripe, and that it never asks for your SSN by text, in-app message, email, phone, social media, WhatsApp or Google Form. If a message asks for your SSN anywhere else, do not send it and contact Handshake support. This is not legal or tax advice, and we cannot judge how any company stores your data.

Is Handshake AI still hiring?

Yes, as of 17 October 2026 Handshake's home page advertised 100+ AI specialist roles, and the program accepts applications on a rolling basis. Selection is competitive and applying does not guarantee a project. Handshake AI is open only to people in the US, and international participation is invite-only.

Can you actually get a job through a Handshake?

Yes, through its main job network: Handshake says employers use it to hire for internships, full-time roles and freelance work. We found no published hire rate on the pages we read, so results vary. Handshake AI is a different thing: project-based contract work with no guaranteed hours, not a job placement.

What is the Handshake AI Fellowship?

It is Handshake's name for its paid, project-based AI training program. Fellows are independent contractors. It is not an academic fellowship, it gives no stipend or school credit, and Handshake says it does not sponsor school credit.

What is a Handshake AI trainer?

"AI trainer" is the role. Handshake describes reviewing and editing AI-generated content, annotating data, writing and ranking responses, and trying to stump the model.

How much does Handshake AI pay?

Handshake says $17 an hour to $150 or more, depending on the project. The role pages we read show ceilings from $17 for a generalist evaluator to $125 for game development and PCB design. A typical or median rate is not published. Hourly projects pay up to a per-task time cap, regardless of how long a task takes.

When does Handshake AI pay?

Handshake says it typically sends payouts by Wednesday afternoon, covering the previous Monday to Sunday. Payments often take about 48 hours to process and should reach your bank within about three days. Per-task pay is calculated and paid separately.

Is there a Handshake AI interview?

Handshake's help center does not describe an interview step. It describes identity verification and project assessments such as a knowledge quiz, a practice task or a written evaluation. Separately, the Terms of Service on its AI site describe an "AI interviewer tool". Do not assume either way until you see your own application.

Can I join Handshake AI from outside the US?

Handshake says you must be based in the US with a valid US work authorization, a Social Security number or ITIN, and work from inside the US. International participation is currently invite-only. Its tax-form article says the W-9 takes either a Social Security number or an EIN, and that non-US participants use a W-8 form. It does not mention Mexico, so we could not confirm it.

Can I use ChatGPT for Handshake AI tasks?

No. Handshake says large language models and other AI-assisted tools are strictly prohibited, including grammar tools. If it concludes you used one, the work is rejected and unpaid.

Where do I log in to Handshake AI?

Through a normal Handshake login. Handshake says to log in on the web and click "AI Work" in the left menu. The official login address is app.joinhandshake.com/login. Beware of look-alike sites.
