micro1 review: is it legit, what it pays, and how the AI interview works

micro1 is a marketplace that places experts on AI training and evaluation projects. Here is what its own pages and its reviewers say, with dates.

Updated October 16, 2026

Short answer

micro1 is a real company with an active expert marketplace, and the public reviews are mostly positive. The catch is that the work is project-based: you can pass the interview, be certified, and still wait for a project. If you have expertise in a field it recruits for and you treat it as flexible side income, it is worth an application. If you need steady hours, it is not.

What micro1 is

micro1 describes itself as a data lab that trains frontier AI models and evaluates AI agents. For job seekers, the relevant part is its expert marketplace: it recruits people with specific skills (coding, law, finance, science, languages and more) and matches them to projects where they review, write or evaluate material that is used to train and test AI systems.

This page is independent. We are not part of micro1, we do not hire anyone, and we are paid a referral fee only if micro1 hires someone who applies through our link. Details are in the affiliate disclosure.

How hiring works

micro1's expert page lists four steps.

  1. Apply for an opportunity that fits your background.
  2. Take the AI interview. micro1's AI recruiter, Zara, runs it on demand.
  3. Get onboarded if you are selected. micro1 confirms by email with onboarding details.
  4. Start earning on a matched project.

micro1 says certification uses structured, skill-based assessments, and that human recruiters review profiles and match experts to projects. It also says certification does not guarantee placement: access to projects depends on project requirements and availability. If you are not matched right away, your profile stays active.

What the AI interview involves

According to micro1's interview guide, the interview is a conversation with Zara, available anytime, and it can include:

  • open-ended technical questions based on the role you choose;
  • scenario questions that test problem solving and communication;
  • a coding challenge, for technical roles;
  • a human data exercise, for annotator roles.

You see in real time whether you meet micro1's certification criteria. If you do not, you can request feedback. micro1's tips: pick one core skill to be evaluated on, use its Interview Prep tool to practice first, and watch its short demo video.

What micro1 roles pay

micro1 does not publish a pay scale on its expert page. Pay appears on individual role listings. These are listed hourly ranges we saw in micro1's opportunity listings on 16 October 2026. They are what micro1 lists for the role, not what you will earn: hours are not guaranteed and listings change daily.

RoleListed pay (USD per hour)What it asks for
AI Product Evaluator$14 to $36AI evaluation, following instructions
Postal Clerk$30 to $45Shipping and customs knowledge
English Voice Recording$20 to $70Native English, clear speech

The pattern is simple: general evaluation work sits in the teens and thirties, mid-level professional roles in the fifties to seventies, and lawyers, scientists and senior finance people above $100. A few research and applied science roles list $245 to $400 an hour.

Is micro1 legit? What reviewers say

On 16 October 2026 micro1 had a 4.7 TrustScore on Trustpilot from 10,866 reviews, with 83 percent giving five stars and 3 percent giving one star. Trustpilot does not fact-check reviews, and we read only the sample shown on the page, so treat the themes as indicative.

  • Praised: the AI interview feeling smooth and professional, quick and helpful staff, and projects described as engaging. One reviewer wrote that payment is real.
  • Criticized: project availability (one reviewer worked a week before tasks ran out and the project closed; another calls contracts "stop and go"), onboarding delays, and unresponsive support during active work. Trustpilot's summary notes the company had not replied to negative reviews.

None of the reviews we read alleged a scam. That is not a guarantee, only what the sample shows.

What micro1's public pages do not tell you

  • The terms of your own contract. The role listing we opened in full (Bilingual Mental Health Expert) is labeled "Role Type: Contractor" and "Location: Remote", so expect independent contractor work and check each listing, but read your actual contract.
  • The payment method and how often you are paid.
  • How many hours a week you can expect once matched.

Ask these before you invest time in a project, and keep your own record of hours worked.

How it compares

Platforms differ most in what they publish about payment, hours and contracts. See all six side by side in platforms compared, or read the reviews of Outlier, Mercor, Remotasks, DataAnnotation and Alignerr.

Who micro1 suits, and who it does not

A good fit: professionals with credentials in a recruited field who want flexible, well-paid side work, and people comfortable with irregular project cycles.

A poor fit: anyone who needs predictable weekly income, and anyone hoping general skills alone will reach the high hourly rates.

Where you can apply from

micro1 says it hires globally, with exceptions for residents of Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Cuba, the DR Congo, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Macao, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine, Yemen and Ethiopia. Check micro1 for the current list, since it can change.

Frequently asked questions

Is micro1 a scam?

We found no evidence of one. micro1 has a large public review base (4.7 out of 5 across 10,866 Trustpilot reviews on 16 October 2026), and none of the reviews we read alleged a scam. The honest complaints are about project availability and support, covered above. Scams do exist that use the name of real platforms, so only apply through micro1.ai and never pay anyone to get hired.

Does micro1 pay?

Reviewers say yes, and one writes "payment is real". micro1's public pages do not state the payment method or schedule, so check both in your onboarding terms before you start work.

How long is the micro1 AI interview?

micro1 does not publish a time limit. It is on demand, so you can start when you are ready. Some Trustpilot reviewers describe long sessions, so set aside a quiet block of time.

Is micro1 full time work?

It can be flexible. micro1 says most opportunities are fully flexible and compatible with other commitments. That is the same flexibility that means no guaranteed hours. Do not plan around it as a salary.

Can I work for micro1 from Mexico or Latin America?

micro1 says it hires globally, with a list of excluded countries. Mexico and most of Latin America are not on that list (Cuba and Venezuela are). Check micro1 for the current list before you apply.

Do I need a degree?

Not for every role. General evaluation roles list lower pay and fewer credentials. The high-paying roles ask for degrees, licenses or professional experience.
