Short answer
Mercor is a real company with a documented weekly payment process, and the larger Trustpilot listing is mostly positive. What the evidence also shows is volatility: projects start and end quickly, hours are capped, and in late 2025 Business Insider reported a project ended and replaced with a lower-paid one. If you have in-demand skills and treat it as temporary, project-based work, it can be worth applying. If you need steady hours, it is not that.
What Mercor is
Mercor describes itself as organizing human intelligence to power the AI economy. Its home page lists experts such as physicians, lawyers, engineers and consultants, and shows openings like Spanish tutors and subject-matter experts for AI red-teaming. It is based in San Francisco.
What Mercor pays
Mercor's home page shows a $112 an hour average contracted rate and example role rates: $60 to $65 an hour for Spanish tutors and $65 to $75 for an energetic materials expert. These are Mercor's own figures. Actual project rates vary widely.
Business Insider reported in November 2025 that the Meta-related project called Musen paid about $21 an hour (based on the article's figures) and that its replacement, Nova, paid $16 an hour. The article also said some workers had earned up to $60 an hour on other Mercor projects. In other words, the headline average is not what every project pays.
How hiring works
Mercor's help center has guides for creating an account, setting up your profile, ID verification, assessments and work trials. Some applications require an AI interview.
The AI interview
- An AI interviewer asks role-specific questions and creates a transcript that is evaluated for the role. Most interviews take about 20 minutes, and some are technical while others test language or reasoning skills.
- Interviews are in English unless stated otherwise. Some include a whiteboard or screen sharing.
- You can retake an official interview up to three times across related applications. Retaking resets your application progress, and hiring managers can see your retake count.
- A free, unlimited practice interview does not affect future opportunities.
- Mercor says it keeps interview recordings and transcripts to evaluate you and recommend your profile to employers, does not sell interview data and does not use it to train AI models.
Mercor's tips: test your camera and microphone, use a quiet space and Chrome, keep answers concise, and tell the AI if it interrupts a pause.
How you are paid
- When: hourly contractors are paid every Wednesday around 12:00 PM Pacific, covering the previous work week. Bonuses and referral payouts follow a separate schedule.
- How: Stripe Connect in countries Stripe supports, Wise elsewhere. Mercor assigns the provider by region and you cannot choose.
- Currency: contract rates are in US dollars and converted to your local currency at payout.
- Conditions: your bank account must be in your own legal name and two-factor authentication is mandatory. Stripe holds your first payout for seven days.
- Fees: standard Stripe payout is free; an instant payout costs 1 percent.
Hours, tracking and contracts
- Hourly work requires the Insightful app, which may take periodic screenshots. Hours not captured through it are not eligible for payment.
- Each contract has a maximum number of hours per week, and Mercor enforces a weekly cap. You cannot increase your hours unless your project lead says so.
- Mercor says legitimate recorded time is paid by default, but it reviews logs weekly and can remove hours for policy violations. You can dispute a removal in the following pay period, and disputes are final.
- Time logged while a contract is paused is not paid.
- Some work is deliverable-based and paid only when deliverables are approved. For those, the contract may be voided without further notice if the customer changes plans.
- Mercor's contracts page does not say whether you are an employee or an independent contractor. Read your own contract and its tax documents.
What happens when a project ends
Mercor's offboarding page says your contract has formally concluded and access to project tools is revoked shortly after. It gives no notice period and promises no hours or pay guarantees. It says endings due to completion, scope changes or budget constraints do not affect your standing, and that you stay eligible for new opportunities if you keep your profile up to date.
Is Mercor legit? What reviewers and the press say
On 16 October 2026 Mercor's main Trustpilot listing (mercor.io) had a 4.5 TrustScore from 1,181 reviews: 73 percent five stars, 9 percent one star. We read 23 recent and featured reviews. A second listing (mercor.com) has only 5 reviews and a 2.5 score, too few to draw conclusions. Trustpilot does not fact-check reviews, and Mercor has replied to only a small share of negative ones.
- Praised: on-time payments, helpful staff and team leaders, and an AI interview some called very good.
- Criticized: contracts paused or ended with little warning, accepted to a project but given no tasks, unstable hours, and laborious onboarding.
The press coverage is more critical. Business Insider reported on 12 November 2025 that Mercor told thousands of contractors the Musen project was ending because of "project scope changes", then offered a similar project at a lower rate. It said more than 5,000 people worked on the project at its peak. A Mercor spokesperson called the reporting inaccurate without saying which details were wrong, and said Mercor is transparent that this is temporary, project-based work.
Things to plan for
- Your hours are capped and can pause or end.
- Time must be tracked in Insightful, with screenshots.
- Your first payout is held for seven days.
- Rates differ from project to project, and sometimes from a project to its replacement.
Where you can work from
Mercor publishes a list of supported countries for payment and says it cannot onboard experts or issue contracts in unsupported locations. Mexico is supported and paid through Stripe. Most Latin American countries are supported; Belize, Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Suriname and Venezuela are not. Check the list before you apply.

Who Mercor suits
A good fit: experts in demand who want project-based work with a clear weekly payment schedule, and who are comfortable with time tracking.
A poor fit: anyone who needs predictable hours or income, or who dislikes screenshot-based time tracking.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mercor legit?
Yes, in the sense that it is a real company that pays contractors; its own help docs describe a weekly payment process and Trustpilot reviewers mostly say they were paid on time. The legitimate concern is stability: projects can end quickly, and in November 2025 Business Insider reported that Mercor ended a large project and offered a similar one at a lower rate.
How does the Mercor AI interview work?
An AI interviewer asks role-specific questions, usually for about 20 minutes, and some interviews are technical or test language or reasoning. You can retake an official interview up to three times across related applications, though a retake resets your application progress. There is a free, unlimited practice interview.
When does Mercor pay?
Mercor says it pays hourly contractors every Wednesday around 12:00 PM Pacific for the previous work week. Stripe places a seven-day hold on your first payout, and Mercor cannot override it.
Does Mercor track your screen?
For hourly work it requires the Insightful desktop app, which may take periodic screenshots to confirm you are working. Hours not captured through Insightful are not eligible for payment.
Can I work for Mercor from Mexico or Latin America?
Mexico is on Mercor's list of supported countries for payment and is paid through Stripe. Most Latin American countries are supported, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Brazil (paid through Wise). Belize, Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Suriname and Venezuela are not supported.
Is Mercor a full-time job?
No. Contracts specify a maximum number of hours per week, projects are temporary, and Mercor's docs do not guarantee any minimum hours.
