micro1 role

Software Engineer at micro1

Reinforcement learning environments are the focus here: contributors build setups in which AI models must fix code, add features, refactor or speed up software. For each problem the contributor writes a reproducible environment, deterministic verifiers and a reference solution. Payment is output-based, and the listing expects a start within one to two days of onboarding.

The listing as micro1 posted it

This is micro1's public listing for the role, read October 29, 2026, with dashes and placeholder links cleaned up. The listing is micro1's text; the summary above and everything below it is ours.

Role Title: Senior Software Engineer

Role Type: Contractor (~15 hrs a week)

Location: Remote

micro1 is selecting Software Engineers to support a customer’s innovative project. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required - your domain knowledge is what matters.

As an expert you will be creating Reinforcement Learning Environments which test and AI model's ability to solve complex software engineering problems related to fixing code, creating features, refactoring code and optimizing performance. You will be tasked with creating a reproducible environment and golden reference solution for the problem.

Scope of Work

  • On this project, you will create realistic, interesting, and extremely challenging coding tasks for frontier AI models using your favourite repositories!
  • You will design problems that require strong software engineering skills, such as tracking down subtle bugs, building non-trivial features, or improving performance.
  • For each task, you will define the problem, build a reproducible environment, and write deterministic verifiers that accept correct solutions across different valid implementations while rejecting incorrect, incomplete, or hard-coded approaches. You will also provide a reference solution showing how the task can be solved.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant hands-on expertise in at least one of the following: Python3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript.
  • Deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software engineering principles.
  • Proven ability to debug complex systems, resolve bugs, and deliver effective optimizations.
  • Experience with large codebase refactoring and legacy system modernization.
  • Track record of delivering high-impact features from conception through delivery within cross-functional projects.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills to articulate technical concepts clearly.
  • Interest in or curiosity about AI and its technical challenges (previous AI experience not required).

Compensation Structure

Compensation is output-based; experts are paid per task that meets the project specifications. The time required to complete work may vary depending on the expert’s experience and workflow. Minimum submission requirements apply. Experts must submit a minimum of tasks per week.

Start Timeline & Availability

We typically fill roles within 48 hours and are looking for experts ready to jump in right away. If selected, we expect you to start your first tasks within 24-48 hours of completing onboarding.

Pay and terms

The listing does not state a rate for this role. It describes pay this way: output-based, paid per approved task. micro1's expert guide describes pay in bands by type of work rather than per role, so treat any figure you see elsewhere as unconfirmed until it appears in your contract.

micro1 engages experts as contractors. Its help library says payments are made in USD twice a month and that contracts and payroll run through Deel. Payments cannot be processed until identity verification there is complete. Read our micro1 review for what workers say about project availability and support.

Before you apply

Engineering listings usually ask for years of professional experience, and some ask for a public code history such as open-source commits. Have your profile or repositories ready to link.

Applying starts with an AI interview, then certification, then matching to projects by recruiters. micro1 says certification does not guarantee a project, so treat this as flexible work and not as a job offer. The how to become an AI trainer guide walks through each step.

Can I work as a software engineer remotely?

At micro1, yes: this Senior Software Engineer listing is remote contractor work of about 15 hours a week. You would build reinforcement learning environments, meaning problems where AI models must fix code, add features, refactor or optimize performance, each with a reproducible environment. Payment is output-based per task, minimum weekly submissions apply, and first tasks are expected within 24 to 48 hours of onboarding.

What do software engineers do as a job?

For this micro1 listing, software engineers design hard problems for frontier AI models using repositories they know, such as subtle bugs, non-trivial features or performance work. For each problem they define the task, build a reproducible environment, write deterministic verifiers and supply a reference solution. The listing asks for strong skill in at least one of Python3, Java, Rust, Go, C++ or TypeScript.

How can I make $100,000 a year working from home?

No set yearly income can be promised from this listing. It describes remote contract work of about 15 hours a week building reinforcement learning environments, paid per task that meets the project specifications, with no rate stated and weekly minimum submissions.
